Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small girl. The aunt was on in the evening shifts as a nursing assistant so she could indulge her passion of theater and literature during the day. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was a social sassy and pushed DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her youth, however she would spend every summer with her extended family members in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's dad recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a student. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury, and then look through their trash. Due to her duties she was dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant at a small film studio following her graduation from college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotional campaigns, such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
